Flying Objects

Oddly enough, it doesn’t have to be a hurricane. It could just be an afternoon thunderstorm! Our afternoon showers can get pretty violent so this applies to both the day-to-day and hurricane weather conditions.

Umbrellas – They’re great when sitting on the patio. But, did you know that they can fly away in a heartbeat? How do I know?  We had an afternoon thunderstorm that got a little wild, and the next thing that I knew, someone else’s umbrella was heading toward my car – “pointy end first”! It fell to the ground about two feet from the side of my car so no damage was done except that the umbrella now had a serious bend in the shaft. I was able to collapse it so that it would fly no more.  By the way, no one ever claimed it.

Lawn and Pool chairs – They are extremely useful and great to use when relaxing. But their light weight allows them to become projectiles (that’s flying hazards) should a hurricane strike or even threaten.

Trash Cans – We all have them, of course. But we don’t need to share them with a neighbor.  When a hurricane is approaching, its time to bring them inside, even if its the garage.

Empty flower pots – You may have one or two outside that you may want to bring in or store somewhere out of the wind.

Flag & Flagpoles – Take the flag down! The pole can usually survive if there is nothing on it. But, the added “drag” of a flag or two may be just enough to break the pole – and WHERE WILL IT FALL?

Did I miss anything?  YOU BET!! There is always something else out there to be secured in a hurricane. Check around before it starts raining and use your imagination.
